Georgia tint law: sedan vs SUV vs truck
The rules depend on what you drive. Cars have a limit on the rear windows. SUVs and trucks usually do not. Here is the breakdown.
Sedans, coupes and hatchbacks
As of October 2026, front side windows must be 28% VLT or lighter. The rear side windows and the back window must be 15% VLT or lighter. The windshield can have tint only on the top 6 inches.
SUVs, trucks and most vans
The front side windows still have to be 28% or lighter. The rear windows of a multipurpose passenger vehicle are exempt from the rear limit, so they can be darker. Georgia's law treats vehicles built on a truck chassis or with off-road features, like most SUVs and trucks, as multipurpose.
Where it gets tricky
Some crossovers and minivans may not count as multipurpose. If you are not sure which group your vehicle falls in, ask us before you pick a dark rear shade. We will tell you what is legal for your exact vehicle.
